Dave
Joseph did not teach me to play music – Dave Joseph taught me how to become a
musician.
He
taught me to always leave home early
– to get to a gig in good time.
He
taught me to – always have a backup
instrument.
He
taught me how to dress for the gig and how to comply with the wishes of the
club or event manager.
Dave
Joseph taught me that – apart from charity functions, however little you get
paid, make sure that you always get
paid. If you don’t, he said, you weaken the whole profession.
I
have never forgotten what Dave Joseph taught me. And here’s the crazy thing: he didn’t actually teach me anything. He educated me. He saw and felt what I had inside – and
he encouraged me to express it, to bring it to life.
When
you played with him – he might reward you. If you listened to
the other musicians if you didn’t play too many unnecessary notes, if you
didn’t play too loudly – then, when you took a solo, Dave rewarded you with the
best ride cymbal you’ve ever heard.
His drumming inspired you to go places that you didn’t think you could
reach.
Dave
Joseph was the true
professional. He lived – and died
– for music.
In
music, as in life, Dave Joseph was a great timekeeper, a great comedian, and a
great friend.
